A rest day is very vital to both the body and mind, and therefore it is necessary to put aside time for a rest day. Your body does a lot of hard strenuous work, so much that your muscles and joints require that healing time to rejuvenate. The idea of a rest day may mean many things to others, hence the importance of having a guideline to make sure that your rest day is spent productively. In this post, I will talk about a few useful things to do on a rest day.
Useful things to do on a rest day
If you are someone who is normally very active and always moving your body. It may sometimes be hard to take a rest day and follow through it without doing much. But then again, if you are someone who hates working out or moving your body all the time, you may love the idea of a rest day. Just be very careful not to fall into bad habits by totally doing nothing on your rest day.
Everyone’s rest day is different depending on the part of your body or mind that needs recovering and healing, and that is why you need to pay attention to your body and really target what needs recovery. It could be that you need to catch up on your sleep, it may be to relax your body and rest your muscles, or it could be your mind that just needs to tune out and find your Zen. Either way, I will help you out with a list of a few useful things to do on a rest day and see if you can incorporate them into your to-do list so that you can have an active rest day.
I will talk about some useful activities, but less energy-consuming things that can be achieved on your rest day. Things like having enough sleep, staying active, eating right and keeping hydrated, and catching up with a friend or two by phone conversation.
Having enough sleep
Sleep is very important, and it plays a very huge role in the body’s recovery. Because when you are asleep, your body repairs the muscles you have damaged with your workout. Try to get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep to give both your body and mind a chance to recharge. When your brain is sleep-deprived you may not be able to fully function at your best, and you may also find that you lack focus and concertation. It is important to have a long good sleep for that refreshed and alert mind that you ought to have.
As much as it is your rest day, try to squeeze in a few less strenuous workouts to keep your body active. You can do half an hour of some water aerobics, or you can take 30 minutes to walk around nature so that, as you exercise your muscles, you are also calming your mind. Stretching is also a very good way of moving your body without much effort and yet very beneficial with the easing of tight muscles.
Eating right and hydrating
You must have heard at least once or twice that food is medicine, and yes, it is medicine literally because what we eat on our rest day plays a huge role in our recovery process. A lean protein diet is important and vital for it helps with muscle development. Adding fruits like oranges and vegetables like spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, and tomatoes, can really help with the reduction of inflammation. And promote quick healing because they contain vitamin C. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and foods rich in Zinc are crucial for the healing process of your tissues. Just try to create a rainbow plate for your meal and have fun with it!
Hydrating yourself is equally important during a rest day because it helps with the regulation of your body temperature. And it balances your PH. The intake of fluids will help with the reduction of the soreness in your muscles, and also, the more you drink, the more you flush the toxins out of your body.
Phone conversation ( Catching up with a friend)
Being on a rest day does not mean going on full-blown isolation, because that would not be good mentally. That is why you need to make a phone call to that one very good friend, that one with who you always have good and positive conversations that always lift up your spirit. Have a good 30-minute chat, catch up on things, and have a good laugh. By the time you hang up that call, you will feel light, happy, and rejuvenated.
Your well-being is very important. That is why it is good to take some time off and rest for a little bit. If possible, you can plan ahead in time on how to implement some of these useful things to do on a rest day.
